Description

This piece of work was the outcome of a six month residency with Birmingham Open Media, to explore  new materials and technology for creating artwork. By investigating what it means to be human, and how such definitions are increasingly becoming blurred through transhuman politics, the residency used 3D printing as a medium for exploring the concept of the homunculus, a human made using artificial alchemical means.

The idea that a recipe could exist with which to make a human underlined a lot of bioethical concerns following advancements in 3D Bioprinting and gene editing technologies. The final artwork became a stand for bespoke glass blown alembics to sit on, but which any object could nest in, emphasising the ubiquitous manner with which 3D printing has become – an everyday occurrence.

The piece was printed in Birmingham by Backface Studios, using a 3d systems project 660. Which uses a gypsum powder composite and CMYK binders the layers are 100microns thick (about the same thickness as a human hair).  The finished print was then air brushed to remove loose plaster and treated with epoxy resin to harden and protect it.

Recipe

The piece was made using photogrammetry in a camera booth using my own body and foam casts, then printed using a 3D systems project 660.

Which uses a gypsum powder composite and CMYK binders the layers are 100microns thick (about the same thickness as a human hair).

The finished print was then air brushed to remove loose plaster and treated with epoxy resin to harden and protect it.

The piece is one solid print which does not require any assembly, a divot on the back, and nooks created by organic shapes will cradle almost anything no additional attachments. Similarly, my print is made from plaster but any material can be used, such as light curing resin or plastic, and printed to any size.
